  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • cups buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • cup melted butter or vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring (gel recommended)

Cream Cheese Glaze

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your waffle iron to medium-high heat and lightly grease it if needed.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until well combined.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix just until combined. Be careful not to over mix.

Cooking

  • Spoon the batter into the preheated waffle iron and cook until the waffles are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
  • Transfer the waffles to a wire rack to keep them crisp while you repeat with the remaining batter.

Making the Glaze

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and softened butter until smooth.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and enough milk to reach a drizzleable consistency.

Serving

  • Drizzle the cream cheese glaze over the warm waffles and serve immediately.

Notes

Serve these beautiful red velvet waffles with a side of fresh berries, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar. Tips: don't over mix, use gel food coloring, preheat the waffle iron, and grease even non-stick surfaces.
