Preparation
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a saucepan, combine water and brown sugar, and bring to a boil until the sugar dissolves.
Remove from heat and stir in milk, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
In a baking dish, layer bread cubes, raisins, and nuts.
Pour the sugar mixture over the layered bread. If using, add cheese slices on top.
Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden and the bread has absorbed the liquid.
Let it cool slightly before serving.
Notes
