  • 4 cups bolillo bread, cut into cubes Use stale bread for the best texture.
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk For a richer taste, substitute part with heavy cream.
  • 1/2 cup raisins Feel free to experiment with different nuts or dried fruits.
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon A sprinkle can enhance the flavor when serving.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • to taste slices cheese (optional) Add on top if desired.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a saucepan, combine water and brown sugar, and bring to a boil until the sugar dissolves.
  • Remove from heat and stir in milk, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
  • In a baking dish, layer bread cubes, raisins, and nuts.
  • Pour the sugar mixture over the layered bread. If using, add cheese slices on top.
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden and the bread has absorbed the liquid.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, warm it in the oven or microwave. Serve warm or at room temperature with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
