Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 5 large Golden Delicious apples, peeled and cubed
  • 1 grated Golden apple
  • cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp water
  • tbsp cornstarch helps thicken the filling
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • tsp nutmeg
  • tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp melted butter

For the Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup + ⅓ cup gluten-free rolled oats
  • cup gluten-free flour (Cup4Cup or similar)
  • cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp water
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • cup chopped nuts (optional) for added crunch

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a small baking dish.
  • Mix all filling ingredients. Spread evenly in the dish, pour over melted butter. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.

Crumble Preparation

  • Prepare the crumble topping by pulsing oats, flour, sugar, salt, vanilla, and butter until crumbly. Add remaining oats and nuts.

Assemble and Bake

  • Remove foil, reduce oven to 350°F (175°C), scatter crumble over the apples, and bake uncovered for 40 minutes, until golden and crisp.

Rest and Serve

  • Cool for 30–60 minutes to let the juices thicken. Serve warm with ice cream or cream.

Notes

Best served slightly warm, after resting. For a deeper flavor, bake a day ahead; the oats absorb the apple syrup overnight, creating a more tender, aromatic texture.
