Instructions
Caramelize Onions
Heat butter or olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly for about 20–25 minutes until they become golden and sweet, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
Brown Beef
Once the onions are caramelized, push them to the side of the skillet. Add the ground beef to the center of the skillet and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.
Deglaze
Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Let it simmer briefly to mix the flavors.
Combine
Stir the caramelized onions back in with the beef mixture, allowing everything to meld together for a few minutes.
Melt Cheese
Sprinkle your choice of cheese over the mixture, then cover the pan briefly until the cheese is melted.
Assemble
Spoon the filling onto the toasted sandwich buns. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired and serve hot.
Notes
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. Toast the buns just before serving for freshness.
