  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice) Experiment with different types of cheese like Gruyère, mozzarella, or Monterey Jack.
  • 2 cups heavy cream Can be substituted with half-and-half or a mixture of milk and butter.
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced Sauté in butter for enhanced flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons butter Dot the top of the potato dish.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (optional) Adds a flavor twist.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (optional for topping)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the potatoes, followed by half of the onions and cheese.
  • Season with garlic powder, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, onions, and cheese.
  • Pour the heavy cream evenly over the layers.
  • Dot the top with butter.
  • If using, sprinkle breadcrumbs over the top.

Baking

  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat at 350°F (175°C) until heated through. Let the dish rest for about 10 minutes after baking for cleaner portions.
